Today at 1PM Eastern, Apple is holding an event where they’re widely expected to announce key information about the Apple Watch, including more detail on functionality, pricing, and availability.
As with most new Apple products, the web is full of speculation and prognostication about what we’ll see today and what it all means. If you’re looking for some smart analysis, I recommend checking out Daring Fireball, Six Colors, and iMore.
I’m most interested in this day as a clear milestone on the road to a far “smarter” future. In just a few years, I have no doubt that if we want them to, our doors will unlock themselves automatically, our homes will adapt themselves to our presence, and our doctors will know exactly what we’ve been up to.
Clearly, the Apple Watch and everything that will follow is one of the most tangible steps forward toward this future.
There’s great potential for disaster as we rely more and more on technology to smooth out the friction in our lives, but also new possibilities for lives that are more focused on meaning and less on mechanics.
I’m cautiously optimistic about the impact technology will have on the world as it becomes more intimately intertwined with our bodies. I can’t wait to see what the folks in Cupertino have in store for us.
