How fast is your Internet connection?
If you’re like most people, you may not know how to figure out the answer to that question. But now you will.
There are a variety of tools available to test Internet connection speeds, but our favorite is a free service from Ookla called Speedtest.net. You can run it from your desktop browser (Flash required) here, and you can download versions for iOS, Android, and Windows Phone here.
Speedtest works by connecting to an Internet server and measuring the time it takes to communicate with it. When you run it, you’ll get results for both your download speed and upload speed.
I just ran Speedtest in my office and got a reported speed of 43Mbps down and 47Mbps up, which is right in line with the speeds we’re paying for as part of our Internet connection.
Do you know what you’re paying for? If not, check your billing or account information to find out, then run Speedtest to make sure that you’re actually getting the speeds that you’re supposed to be getting. If you’re not, call your provider for help.
There could be an issue with your account, or there may be other problems lurking locally on your network, perhaps with your router configuration. Either way, running Speedtest is an easy way to check the pulse of your connectivity. And if what you find is lacking, better speeds could just be a phone call away.
